Next month (22-23 September) will see the AES Mastering Group’s first UK Mastering Conference take place at Londons’ University of Westminster.

Speakers on the line up include White Mark's David Bell and mastering engineers Mandy Parnell, Darcy Proper, Crispin Herrod Taylor and Mike Wells.

Academics, mastering engineers, producers, artists, industry professionals, technology developers and equipment manufacturers will come together and deliver papers, engineering briefs or workshops on a wide range of topics including:

  • HD Vinyl, a next general vinyl technology that offers a universal improvement to the industry’s most classic format.
  • “Transient Vitality” and Current Loudness Measurement Metrics - A practical overview of the range of existing dynamic metering metrics will be presented, while highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each method referenced to current best practices. “Transient Vitality,” the dynamic structure of transient events, and the limits of TPL when considering Transient Vitality, will also be discussed.
  • Exponential Spatial Merging as Sample-based (Re)Mastering in Contemporary Hip-Hop Practice. This research focuses on the merging of past and present spatial illusions exploring how hip-hop producers negotiate the dimensions of ‘depth’, ‘height’ and ‘width’ imprinted onto masters used as sampled sources.
  • Business matters relating to mastering & post-production

Speakers include Mandy Parnell (Black Saloon Mastering), David Bell (Whitemark), Crispin Herrod-Taylor (Crookwood), Mike Cave (Loft Mastering) and Guenter Loibl (Rebeat HD Vinyl).

JP Braddock (of Formation Audio) notes that, “this will be the first opportunity for the community to come together and discuss matters about high quality audio and the future of delivery and consumption”.

After the conference, those presenting papers or eligible engineering briefs will be given the option to prepare their work for inclusion in the conference book to be considered for publication with Routledge.

The AES Mastering Conference 2018 (AES:UKMC’18) is hosted by the University of Westminster at their Regent St campus in Central London.
