Taking centre stage this week is touring FOH engineer Phil Gornell…
Where did you study?
I studied Music & Sound Technology at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts until 2007. The place and the facilities were incredible, but every lunchtime felt like a scene from Glee....
Which band/project are you currently working on?
For the past few years I've been touring with Sheffield metal band Bring Me The Horizon as their FOH engineer. We've travelled all over the world, from Cardiff to Jakarta, in venues from 500-20,000.
Where are you based/working at the moment?
When I'm not on tour, I am based in Sheffield, were I do some work at Sheffield O2 Academy to keep my ears fresh.
Which audio console are you currently using? And how many channels?
For the past year we have been touring with Allen & Heath iLive systems. Using the MADI protocol we can digitally split the signal from MONS>FOH>RECORD, getting all 28 Channels where we need them very easily. I love using the iLive R72; its small/portable size means we can fly with it worldwide, and I can work off the same surface every day.
What decision process was behind the choice of this console?
I love the colour of the sound from the pre's in the iDR Mixrack, and it's modular interface is easy/fast to operate, allowing me to create my own personal surface, with the arrangement of inputs/returns/groups/VCAs/FX.
Do you use any outboard effects/EQ, and if so, what are they used on and why?
I never leave home without my Waves gear. I use the MaxxBCL on the master-bus; it brings some of the worst sounding PAs and rooms to life, and really helps to smooth out the overall transients of my mix.
What is your console of choice:
In an ideal world, where cost, and efficiency isn't an issue when I tour, my console of choice would have to be the Midas Heritage 2000. The sheer sonic superiority is one, which, in my opinion, is yet to be challenged. To mix Bring Me The Horizon, however, it would take some serious outboard gear to keep control of their dynamics, a basic advantage to touring with a digital desk, is the ease of applying dynamics (compressors/gates) to any channel.
If you could tour with any band/artist who would it be?
Having only toured, primarily, with rock/alternative artists, I would really like to try my hand at something down a completely different genre. Something really challenging like an orchestra/philharmonic would definitely tick the boxes.
