Four Allen & Heath iLive digital mixing systems handled the grand opening of the Vienna Music and Arts festival this year.

Held outside the historic City Hall in Rathaus Square, the annual event – along with its organisers – has relied on iLive consoles for the past four years.

A number of different console sizes were required to manage the various artists, many of which were there to take part in the final of the Eurovision Young Musicians Contest. The finalists were backed by the Radio Symphonic Orchestra Vienna (RSO Vienna), and support acts included seven-piece brass band Mnozil Brass and The Percussive Planet.

A modular iDR10 MixRack with iLive-144 Surface was selected for the main competition, as well as the orchestra, while an iDR-48 with iLive-T112 surface for The Percussive Planet, and iDR-16 with iLive-R72 surface for Mnozil Brass, were also picked.

A separate, dedicated IDR0 rack was used for signal distribution and the playout of the various loudspeaker feeds via an Ethersound network. Another iDR-48 rack and iLive-T112 surface took care of the on-stage monitoring as well.

The main front of house console was fed with 64 channels and the T112 at FOH employed 36 channels for the support acts, along with another 16 channels for Mnozil Brass. Monitoring on stage was handled through 48 channels, plus an Ambisonic simulation for the Symphonic orchestra. Signal routing and distribution was done via Ethersound and ACE connections.

“iLive is flexible and easy to set up, which is why I select it every year for this event,” said Adolf Toegel (pictured), audio technical director for the event. “Ethersound as a platform performed flawlessly and the iLive systems enabled FOH to be very clean and organised and yet very capable of running all the various tasks. The required independence of the two support acts was guaranteed by the additional T112 and R72 systems. There are a number of features within the iLive mixer design that make my job much easier, and that is why I always choose to use iLive.”
